Dental coverage is not like health coverage. Dental coverage varies by product type, and then by plan benefits. There are four coverage types of plans available for you to choose from and each has its advantages and disadvantages. It is important to note that not all dentists accept all types of plans, so it is very important that you verify if your dentist accepts the plan you choose. Also, many plans do not have coverage for cosmetic dentistry, or in some cases, orthodontics. Usually dental implants are not covered, but dentures generally are.

The five types of dental plans include:
Dental PPO Insurance Plans (PPO)
These plans allow you to see any dentist, but offer more savings when you go to a network provider. They usually have no or limited waiting periods for preventative care, but do have waiting periods for basic and major services. There is usually an annual maximum that the carrier is willing to pay towards covered services. These plans usually reimburse the dentists a percentage based off the "Usual and Customary Rate" for the service that is provided. That rate may not always be what your provider charges, so always review the dental treatment plan prior to having a service completed. However, if you have service completed in-network, they will probably have a set discounted rate.
Dental Health Maintenance Organizations (DHMO)
These are usually much cheaper than the PPO dental plans and dental indemnity insurance plans. DHMO's have networks of dentists under contract with the dental insurance company and offer member's set rates for various procedures. You cannot see a provider outside of the network on these plans.
Dental Indemnity Plans (Non-Network)
These plans will reimburse you (or sometimes the dentist if they will file a claim) for services that you have completed at any provider as long as they are covered procedures. Example: They may pay you $50 for a filling. If that filling costs more or less you are responsible for the difference. So, if the dentist charges you $90, you'd have to pay out $40 more then you are would be reimbursed for. Per Assurant/Time Health (A large National Dental Insurance Carrier), approximately only 40% of dentists take part in dental networks. So this type of plan would work best for those with dentists that do not participate in dental networks. These plans generally require the member file a claim form in order to be reimbursed.
Dental Discount Plans
These are extremely popular because of their pricing, and in most cases offer access to the most benefits without any waiting periods, pre-existing condition limitations, or annual maximums. Plan premiums usually range from $99-$150 annually for an individual and $150-$190 for a family. They are network plans, meaning you must use a dentist that has contracted or agreed to accept the plan terms and conditions. Many dentists that want to grow their practices usually accept these plans. By doing so, the carrier is able to provide them with new patients and they in-turn will only bill the patient the agreed upon rate of that plan. They usually offer low to no cost preventative care and lower cost co-pays for most basic and/or major services.
Prepaid Dental Plans
These are similar to "Discount Dental Plans". See above.
